# Why should I use an alternative email address for my Client Portal?

Why should I add an alternative email address to my Client Portal account?

The email addresses held within your Client Portal are used for important account and service communications. These may include invoices, renewal reminders and notifications affecting your domains, hosting or other services.

We recommend having at least one contact email address that does not depend on a domain or hosting service held within the same account.

Why is this important?

If all the email addresses on your account use a domain registered or hosted through us, you could lose access to them if the domain:

- Expires or is suspended
- Experiences a DNS issue
- Has an email or hosting fault
- Is transferred, cancelled or otherwise becomes unavailable

This could prevent you from receiving important notifications at the point you need them most.

Using an independently hosted email address avoids this dependency and helps ensure we can continue contacting you if one of your services is unavailable.

Your options

You can either change the primary email address held against your account or add a secondary contact.

### Option 1: Change your primary account email address

Choose this option if you are happy for your independently hosted email address to become the main contact address for the account.

1. Sign in to your [Client Portal](https://help.blakemarkdigital.co.uk/how-do-i-login-to-my-client-area).
2. Open your account details.
3. Replace the existing email address.
4. Save your changes.

### Option 2: Add a secondary contact

Choose this option if you want to keep your existing primary email address while adding an independent address as a backup contact.

You can choose which types of notifications the secondary contact should receive, including account, service, domain and invoice emails. If you are insure we have a [guide on how to add a secondary contact](https://help.blakemarkdigital.co.uk/how-to-add-a-secondary-contact-to-your-client-portal-account).

### What type of email address should I use?

Your alternative email address should:

- Use a different domain from those registered or hosted within the account
- Belong to you or another authorised account contact
- Be monitored regularly
- Remain accessible independently of the services we provide

This could be an address hosted by another provider or an established Gmail, Outlook or similar account.
